Samples photos from my Sony SEL35F18 Prime Lens

Recently I picked up a Sony 35mm, F1.8 prime lens from Cathay Photo at Marina Square. I’ve been itching to expand my library of Sony Nex E-Mount lenses for my 5R and wanted to get a sharp and fast lens for low-light shooting.

Coincidentally, I was attending a friend’s wedding at ONE15 Marina Club the same evening I picked up the lens, so it was a good excuse to test it under low light situations.

I also used this lens while having dinner and drinks with my good army buddies. Even though I have not spent much time with this lens, I was quite impressed with its quality.

Its low light performance is much better than the kit 16-50 power zoom kit lens. and it is reasonably sharp when stopped down. This lens managed to take some low-light photos that had more detail  than my own eyes could see. I am quite happy with the results thus far, but I must say that I am starting to feel the pinch of being an Nex user. Nex lenses are expensive and there aren’t many third party lenses on the market.

Even though Sony and third party manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron are releasing more lenses, I can’t help but feel envious of the Micro Four Thirds lens ecosystem. Aw well, you can’t have it all I guess (or at least not yet).

I also recently purchased the wallet-crippling, $1,300 Carl Zeiss SEL1670Z, constant F4 zoom lens, also from Cathay Photo. The 16-70mm will cover a wide variety of my shooting needs, so I’m willing to spend a bit more on a good piece of glass that will live on my camera.

I haven’t done much shooting with that lens yet, so  I am keen to see if the Carl Zeiss glass can live up to my expectations, but that’s another post for another time. Enjoy the samples from the SEL35F18!
